LIMA — Bonita Glee "Bonnie" Place, 95, of Lima and formerly of Spencerville and Cridersville, passed away peacefully at 11:22 PM Monday, November 26, 2018 in the Shawnee Manor, where she had resided since 2016.
She was born October 5, 1923 in Buckland, a daughter of the late Charles Otto and Emma Elizabeth Doering Anspaugh. On December 23, 1942 she married Carl Cleveland Place, who died September 29, 1999.
She is survived by her son Carl Preston (Pamela) Place of rural Lima and her daughter; Kimbra L. "Kim" (Stephen R.) Stratford of Lake Havasu, AZ.; three grandchildren; Aimee (Dale) Lucius of Santa Fe, NM.; Meredith (Hugh) Place-Ducker of Edinboraugh, Scotland and Makenzie Place of Cincinnati; and 5 great grandchildren;
Four siblings; Floy (Powers) Cozad; Judson Anspaugh; Mason (Mary) Anspaugh and infant sister Anspaugh preceded her in death.
Bonnie graduated from Buckland High School as its Salutatorian in 1941 and attended The Ohio State University . During WWII, while her husband was in the war, she worked at the Tank Depot in Lima building the Sherman Tanks. She learned all components of the tank and became the Chief Inspector before they went overseas.. Later she worked as a secretary at the Cridersville School and then worked for the Dept. of Agriculture with the Allen County Extension Service.
She was a member of Cable Road Alliance Church and had been a volunteer at St. Rita's Medical Center. Earlier she was a member of Koneta Chapter 385, Order of Eastern Star in Wapakoneta and had been very active in the Cridersville Garden Club.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Friday in the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville with Pastor Kent Place officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Wapakoneta.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Thursday and after 10 AM Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnny Appleseed Park District.
