WAPAKONETA — Carolyn E. Boyer, age 84, of Plano, Texas, formerly of rural Wapakoneta, peacefully passed away at her home on Friday, October 13, 2017. Carolyn had been living in Texas to be near her daughter.
Carolyn was born on June 16, 1933 in Spencerville, Ohio. She was the daughter of Alex and Irene (Hooks) Mayer, who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a son, Phillip A. Boyer and a sister, Ruth Ann Mills.
On September 19, 1953, she married Herbert G. Boyer, of Spencerville, and enjoyed a happy marriage of more than 55 years until his death on January 14, 2009.
Carolyn was a graduate of Spencerville High School. She pursued and earned her certifications as a registered nurse after graduating from the prestigious Lima Memorial School of Nursing in 1961. Her nursing career included many years at the Lima Memorial Hospital and then to the Auglaize County Health Department where she provided home health care. She is a former member of First United Methodist Church and enjoyed hobbies which included reading and knitting. She had a special love for animals, especially her pet dachshund, Zoe'.
Her life can be described as one where she was devoted to her profession, family, and friends. She and her husband operated farms in Spencerville and near Wapakoneta for many years while they both held full time jobs. After many years of hard work, they retired early and then moved to a resort in Surprise, Arizona to pursue some fun and enjoy the mild winters. During retirement, they traveled extensively by recreation vehicle, to many places in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They also enjoyed many ocean cruises together.
Surviving family includes: A daughter and son-in-law, Katharine Boyer and Lawrence Burry of Plano, Texas. A sister, Mary C. (Bill) Smith of Findlay, Ohio. Grandchildren include KristyAnna Boyer and Jeff Carrier of Chicago, Illinois; Cassandra (Robert) Baker, Lawrence Burry III, and Suzanne Wear, of Colorado Springs, Colorado 3 great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews who live in locations all across the United States. Many in-law relatives, who accepted her as family, and live in locations across the United States.
Carolyn will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was an independent woman who was frequently described by many as a kind woman with big heart and warm demeanor. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society as Carolyn had a deep passion and interest in a cure for cancer.
Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville. Services are scheduled for October 21, 2017 at 11:00 with visitation on October 20th between 4:00 – 8:00 pm. Burial will follow services at the Maplewood Cemetery, near Spencerville.
