SPENCERVILLE — Charles N. "Chuck" "Newt" Dawson, 82 of Spencerville and formerly of Lima, passed away peacefully with his wife at his side at 10:14 PM Saturday, September 16, 2017 in the Shawnee Manor following his 17 year battle with Alzheimers Disease.
He was born August 15, 1935 in Lima, a son of Charles L. and Beatrice "Ruth" Smith Dawson, who are deceased. On January 18, 1963 he married F. Maxine "Pat" Mumea, who survives, along with three sons; Tony (Julia) Dawson of Miamisburg; Scott Dawson of Spencerville and Timothy (Meghan) Dawson of Ardmore, OK.; seven grandchildren; Jeffrey Dawson of Miamisburg; David Dawson of Dayton; Amanda (Tyler) Nance of Wapakoneta; McKenna, Toby, Logan and Cooper Dawson, all of Oklahoma; four great grandchildren; Brayden Hooker, Grady and Kaysen Nance and Annaliese Dawson; two brothers; Richard Dawson of Lima and William (Sheryl) Dawson of Stillwater, OK. And three sisters; Marna (David) Baty of Elida; Martha Dawson and Mary Dawson of Lima.
Preceding him in death is his brother; Robert (Pam) Dawson.
Chuck was a 1953 graduate of the Elida High School and then served four years in the Air Force.
He worked in auto body repair with his father at the Robb Avenue Body Shop and later worked with his son Tony at the Lima Cadillac Company.
He was a member of the Spencerville Church of the Nazarene and the Bowersock Bros. VFW Post 6772 in Spencerville. In his younger days he enjoyed DragRacing with his 1961 Chevy Super Sport 409 "Black Lightning" at Kettlersville, Marion, Muncie. IN. among other dragways, and did quite well.
Later on he enjoyed his 1962 White Corvette for many years and coin collecting.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday in the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville with Pastor Tom Shobe officiating. The Spencerville Veterans and the Air Force Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites following the service at the funeral home. Cremation will follow.
The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 PM Wednesday and after 9:30 AM Thursday at the funeral home.
