Edith Marguerite Wendling Troyer, 93, died at 3:15 PM on May 27, 2024 at Primrose of Lima. She was born on December 30, 1930 in Wissembourg, France, to the late Frederic & Babette Wendling. She married Fredrick Troyer in Wissembourg on January 10, 1950. They raised five children on their farm near Elida, Ohio; Glenn, Karen, Marc, Cynthia and Galen.

As a young woman, she attended the Institute for Home Economics where she studied cooking and became an excellent seamstress. She worked at an orphanage after World War II called Mont Des Oiseaux, where she met Fred, who was serving with Mennonite Central Committee's Reconstruction and Transport Unit in France following World War II.

Their shared interested in nature and helping others shaped their lives and became a life long mission. She was a woman of faith and was active in her home congregation of Pike Mennonite Church in Elida, Ohio, serving in various capacities. Her other interests included gardening, quilting, cooking, reading, and entertaining.

She maintained a close relationship with her family in France by traveling with her parents, her sister Jacqueline, her brother Claude, and their families throughout the United States and Europe.

After retiring from the farm, Fred and Edith spent time volunteering with the Mennonite Disaster Committee across the US and continued their mission of helping others by assisting those during their most desperate times of need.

Survivors include two sons, Glenn (Sharon) Troyer and Galen (Elaine) Troyer, both of Elida; two daughters, Karen (Martin) Miller of Harrisonburg, VA, and Cindy (Darwin) Hartman, of Elida; a daughter-in-law, Jane Steinmetz, of Bluffton; as well as 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, with 3 more on the way. Grandchildren include Michael (Cheryl) Troyer of Elida; James (Evelin) Miller-Gonzales of Harrisonburg, VA; Sarah (Brian) Mulwe of Pittsburg, PA; Benjamin (Suzy) Troyer of Elida; Wesley (Elyse) Hartman, of Elida; Aaron (Kelly) Troyer of Findlay; Elisa Miller of Harrisonburg, VA; Derek (Savannah) Hartman of Lawrence, KS; Lynelle (Matt) Dues of Harrod; Shelby (Blair) Stegman of Lebanon, OH; and Casey (Stephanie) Troyer of Colorado Springs, CO.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Troyer; a son, Marc Troyer; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Troyer; an infant grandson; a granddaughter-in-law, Morgandy Hartman; her sister, Jacqueline Brigaldino; and her brother, Claude Wendling.

Edith's family is very grateful to the Primrose staff and the Bridge Hospice Care Team for providing excellent care during her last months of life.

There will be a visitation from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024 at Pike Mennonite Church in Elida. Visitation will continue from 9:00-10:00 a.m. followed by her funeral service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024 also at the church with Pastor Matt Cordella officiating. Burial will take place following the service at Pike Cemetery. Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville is caring for Edith and her family.
