Spencerville; Garry D. Schwartz, 81, of rural Spencerville, passed away at 3:02 AM Friday, December 17, 2021 in the Mercy Health St. Rita's Medical Center, with his family at his side, following an extended illness.
He was born June 21, 1940 in Salem Twp., Auglaize County, a son of the late Lester and Melba Rohrbach Schwartz. On February 3, 1959 he married Ruth Ann McDermitt, who survives, along with three sons; Jerry Schwartz of Spencerville, Brent (Laura) Schwartz of Wapakoneta and Jeff (Cindy) Schwartz of Flemingsburg, KY. His brother Richard preceded him in death.
Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, Bobbie Jo (Chris) O'Dell of Spencerville, Mike (Karla) Schwartz of Chesterton, IN., Joel (Andrea) Schwartz of Spencerville, Cory (Becca) Schwartz of San Diego, CA., Cassie (Lucas) Poppe of Knoxville, TN., Chris (Samantha Bianchi) Schwartz of Round Rock, TX., Zack (Margaret) Schwartz of Paris, KY., Taylor (Kelsey) Schwartz of Mayslick, KY. and Cooper Schwartz of Flemingsburg, KY.; 10 great grandchildren, Brandon (Brooke Mullins) O'Dell, Alexzandria O'Dell, Cara, Connor, Payton, Ethan, Bryce, Nora, Matt and Ben Schwartz and one-on-the way and several nieces and nephews.
Garry's in-laws are Mary (Robert) Howell of Wapakoneta, Chuck (Karen) McDermitt of Stockbridge, GA., Judy (Richard) Howell of Yorktown, IN., Jake (Deb) McDermitt of St. Marys and his brother-in-law Floyd Sheaks of St. Marys. His sister-in-law Jean Sheaks preceded him in death.
He was a 1958 graduate of Spencerville High School and had worked at the Minster Machine Company , retired from the Auglaize County Highway Garage and enjoyed farming. He was a long time member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge # 311 in Spencerville. He and Ruth founded and served for 44 years as advisors of the 4 H Noble Sod Busters Club of St. Marys. Garry served many years on the Auglaize County Jr. Fair Board and the Livestock Sale Committee.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday in the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, with Pastor Neal Whitney officiating. Burial will follow in the Kossuth Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 PM Tuesday and after 9:30 AM Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer or Heart Assn's.
