GERALD LEWIS

SPENCERVILLE — Dr. Gerald E. Lewis, 82, died Nov. 11, 2014, in Kyle, Texas.

He was born May 4, 1932, in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, to Scott W. and Laura Herriott Lewis. On June 20, 1959, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, he married Theresa Flynn, who survives.

Dr. Lewis graduated from Sharpsville High School in Pennsylvania, attended Westminster College and graduated in 1955 from the Pennsylvania State University in dairy sciences and the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1958. While in veterinary school he worked as an intern at the Women's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. After graduation he worked as a veterinary associate in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. In 1960 he purchased Spencerville Animal Hospital and then founded Amanda Animal Hospital in 1968, where he practiced both farm and pet animal medicine until his retirement in 1997. Dr. Lewis was a past president of the Northwest Ohio Association of Veterinary Medicine and the Lima Area Academy of Small Animal Medicine and served as a secretary for several years. He was active in both the Ohio and American Veterinary Associations. He was a lifetime honorary member of the AVMA. He raised Polled Hereford cattle, was an avid bird watcher, played bass violin the Lima Symphony Orchestra, played the organ at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Spencerville and, after retirement, traveled extensively, visiting all seven continents and more than 60 countries.

Survivors also include a brother, James S. (Mary Lou) Lewis; a sister, Shirley Minner; an adopted daughter, Susan (Lindsey) Gamble; two sons, John S. (Hagit) Lewis and James M. (Gigi) Lewis; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Alta Mae Rademacher; and a brother, Scott W. Lewis.

A memorial Mass will begin at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 6 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Spencerville, followed by a luncheon.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Audubon Society or to Heifers International, in care of the funeral home.
