Janice "Jan"
Nell Leis
October 16, 1941 – March 13, 2026
Janice "Jan" Nell Leis of Spencerville, Ohio passed peacefully on March 13, 2026. She was 84 years old.
Jan was born on October 16, 1941, in Lima, the first born of Rev. Harold B. and Ruth Nell (Mark) Miller. She was raised in Spencerville, active throughout her school years in various sports and clubs and graduated from Spencerville High School in 1959. While working as a carhop at a nearby establishment, she met James "Jim" L. Leis. They married on December 30, 1962. Together they built a family home surrounded by the Leis Farm, which Jim farmed until his passing in January 1998, and in which Jan lived until her death.
Jan worked at Mi-Lady Beauty Shop after her children entered school and later for Reliable Heating and Plumbing, where after more than 30 years she retired at the age of 72. She and Jim are widely known for the homegrown sweet corn, peaches and other fresh produce sold at the Leis Produce Stand on the east side of Spencerville.
An avid reader all her life, Jan also enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, camping, boating, playing cards and bingo. Some of her most cherished memories were with family and friends - enjoying a weekend game of dominos surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending sports or music events or traveling throughout the US. A self-taught cook, Jan served up meals that her family still reminisce about and was known for her homemade cherry, black raspberry and peach pies.
Jan was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary Spencerville Post 6772 and a standing member of the American Legion Post 191 and Northwest Ohio Field and Stream. Both she and Jim were active in the Dumpbusters in the 80's. Jan served as room mother and Girl Scout leader and with Jim served as youth group leader at the Spencerville United Church of Christ where they were members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and survived by her children, Lori Bair, Jodi Leis and Daren Leis; sons-in-law Howard Bair and Kevin Fullen and daughter-in-law Laura Leis. Grandchildren Jessica Yahl (Adam), Logan Bair (Jena), Allison Aten (Sam), Faith Fullen, Hannah Leis, Mark Fullen, Emma Leis and Toby Yahl; great-grandchildren Ella Stanfield, Aiden Bair, Evan Bair and Hendrix Aten. Brother Ronald Miller; sister Amy Hale as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews and their families.
Many thanks to Marie and EverHeart Hospice for the comfort and care provided to Jan and the family over the past several months.
There will be a gathering of family and friends from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. followed by her Celebration of Life Service at 12:00 p.m on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville with Pastor Jim Lyle officiating. Jan will be buried next to her husband at a later date at Spencerville Cemetery.
