KARL HIRN
LIMA — Karl "Dean" Hirn, 69, of Perry Township, died at 4:03 p.m. Sept. 10, 2014, at St. Rita's Medical Center with his family at his side, following an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 5, 1944, in Spencerville, to Karl E. "Bud" and Juliana "Dottie" Miller Hirn. His father died from injuries suffered in World War II shortly after Dean was born. His mother and stepfather, Vaughn Morgan, preceded him in death. On Oct. 1, 1983, he married Kathleen L. "Kathy" Steiner, who survives.
Mr. Hirn was a 1963 graduate of Lincolnview High School, where he was the star pitcher for the 1962 state high school baseball championship Lancers. He was later scouted by several Major League Baseball teams, but an elbow injury stopped that adventure. He later worked for Al's Towing, Goodwill Industries and the J.C. Penney Co., all in Lima, where he retired in 2003. His hobbies were gardening and golfing and he was an avid OSU football fan, as well as rooting for the Cleveland Indians and Browns.
Survivors also include three sons, Darrin Dean Hirn, of Florence, Kentucky, Brandon Karl Hirn, of Lima and Bryan David (Beth) Hirn, of Sidney; four grandchildren, Haley Hirn, Maleah Hirn, Kynnedi Hirn and 4-month-old Carson David Hirn; his mother-in-law, Irene M. Steiner, of Lima; and in-laws Patricia "Pat" Hirn, of Clarkston, Michigan, Linda (Daryl) Worrell, of Arkansas, Mike (Irma) Steiner of North Carolina, Judy Doute, of Lima, and Mark (Ing-Wan) Steiner of Fairfield.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Justin Michael Hirn; two brothers, Dennis Lynn Hirn and Janic Lee Hirn; a sister, Judith Hirn; a sister-in-law, Joyce Hirn; and an in-law, Jim Doute.
