Maurice W. "Shorty" Hager, of rural Spencerville, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 17, 2026.

Maurice was born on September 7, 1929, the son of Martin and Vita Hager, who preceded him in death. He married the love of his life, Waneta R. "Sweetie" Hager, on November 17, 1977. She preceded him in death.

Maurice spent his life working as a farmer and was a dedicated member of the Farm Bureau. He found great joy in harvesting his crops and taking pride in the land he cared for. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting pheasants and fishing for saugeyes at Indian Lake alongside Waneta, where the two cherished using simple cane poles. Together, they especially treasured the holidays and time spent with family.

He was a faithful member of Kossuth Zion United Methodist Church. Maurice was known as a quiet man who kept to himself, yet his steady presence and strong work ethic left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

He is survived by his stepchildren: David (Donna) Holtzhauer of Spencerville, Beverly (Mark) Harbert of Buckland, Jan (David) Bolinger of Spencerville, and Tina Jones of Delphos; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two stepdaughters, Donna (Roger) Crites and Laurie Barnes; a brother, Norman Hager; and a sister, Letha Method.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, at Kossuth Cemetery with Pastor Parker Miley. Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville is caring for Maurice and his family.
