Obituary

Michael C. Shaner, 71, of Lima, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2024, at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima.

Michael was born on October 19, 1953, in Lima, OH to the late Arthur Everett and Margaret Louise (Brinkman) Shaner. He grew up in Spencerville, graduating from Spencerville High School in 1972. Shortly after high school, he went to the police academy and became a police officer when he was 21. He was with the Spencerville Police Department for 26 years and during that time, he had been on drug units for the Allen County Sheriff Dept., Shelby County, and Findlay Police Department. Aside from being a police officer, he also worked as a chemical operator at BP for 43 years. While at BP he was the OCAW Nitriles Group Chairman from 1995-1999, elected to serve as the Local President from 1999-2008 and during that time, OCAW merged with the Paper Union to become PACE, which later merged with the USW. On May 28, 1988, Michael was united in marriage to the love of his life, Deborah K. Horn, at the United Methodist Church on Bluelick Rd. The love Mike and Deb shared for each other made their years of marriage seem like one long honeymoon.

Michael loved going out on his sailing boat and riding motorcycles, especially his 2000 Classic King Harley Davidson any chance he got. He also enjoyed playing cards with friendsand family, which most of the time he won and was hard to beat. His greatest love and pride was his family and the time he spent with them and their kids. Mike and Deb had the honor to help care for their nephew, Benjamin Huddleston and niece, Stacey Thompson when they were younger. Just like a second set of parents, Mike treated them as if they were his own children. It meant more to Michael to have that opportunity, to be a part of their lives then they would ever know.

Michael will be truly missed by his beloved wife, DeborahShaner; special niece, Stacey (David) Thompson of Columbus; siblings, Jim (Mary) Shaner of Kalkaska, MI, Rose (Kevin) Jones of Wapakoneta and Margie (Geno) Gannon of Wapakoneta; sister-in-law, Beverly Shaner; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; special nephew, Benjamin Huddleston; siblings, Barbara (Bill) Gross, Diane (Art) Vannette, and Robert Shaner; and their many beloved fur babies.
