RICHARD BOROFF
SPENCERVILLE — Richard Dean Boroff, 81, of Spencerville, passed away at 4 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2016, at St. Rita's Medical Center shortly after admission.
He was born July 21, 1935 in Mercer County to Harry and Annetta Jones Boroff, who are deceased. On May 2, 1970 he married Lois Slentz Jones, who survives.
Also surviving are 2 sons; Alvie Dean (Sheryl) and Brian Harry (Kay); six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister; Mildred Patrick and a brother, Charles (Norma) Boroff and a sister-in-law, Martha Fast.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Paul and Donald Boroff and sisters-in-law, Edith Boroff, Esther Boroff, Carolyn Boroff, Betty Sawmiller and Margie Harbert and brothers-in-law, Harold Patrick, Harold Fast, Foster Sawmiller and John Harbert, Jr.
In 2008 he retired as a Toolmaker with the former Ohio Decorative Products in Spencerville after 40 years of service.
He was a 1954 graduate of Mendon Union High School and also attended Bluffton College. He was in the military service in 1956 thru 1958 and was recalled to service in 1961 thru 1962. He served in the U.S. Army and earned a Certificate of Achievement for meritorious service while serving as Dispensary and Ward Sergeant in the 250th Evacuation Hospital (SMBL) U.S. Army Armor School Troops at Fort Knox, KY. In this capacity, he was responsible for the operation of the dispensary and did so in such an excellent manor that it became the highest rated dispensary on post.
He was a life member of Lima Elks, BPOE #54 and a life member of the National Foundation Quarter Horse Association and the Ohio Foundation Quarter Horse Club. He loved training horses. He and his wife had the Silver Saddles Horse Unit which rode in and led parades for 25 years.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Spencerville Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Spencerville Veterans. Friends may call from 3 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home in Spencerville.
