Richard B. Harter, 85, of Spencerville, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at Roselawn Manor in Spencerville.
Richard was born on January 20, 1940, in Spencerville to the late Theodore "Ted" and Evelyn M. Harter. He grew up in the Spencerville community and attended Spencerville High School. After leaving high school, he joined the family business working with his dad at Harter & Sons Butcher until 1979. After the butcher closed in 79', he went to work at Flexible Foam until his retirement. On August 31, 1956, he was united in marriage to Ruth J. Mulholland and together they raised two children. Ruth passed away on January 29, 2012.
Richard was a former member of the American Legion and the VFW in Spencerville. He loved to golf, fish, bowl, and to meet the guys uptown afterwards to play cards. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Richard is survived by his son, Robert (Anne) Harter of Frederick, Maryland; eight grandchildren, Shawn (Davine) Harter, Shannon Harter, Shane (Kelly) Harter, Shelley (Michael) Hartley, Shay (Abbey) Harter, Victoria (Pat) Ruffner, Whitney (Chaz) Niffenegger, Marcus (Krystal) Harter; twenty-four great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; siblings, Dixie (James) Bennett & Charles (Sylvia) Harter; his son, Ricky E. Harter; and one great granddaughter, Hailey Rae Harter.
There will be a visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2025 at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville. Visitation will continue from 10:00-11:00 a.m. followed by his funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025 also at the funeral home with pastor Andrew J. Atkins officiating. Burial will take place following the service at Spencerville Cemetery. Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville is caring for Richard and his family. In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials may be given to the Spencerville Ambulance Service.
